Assumptions and Calculations

Here are the assumptions and mathematical formulas used in this calculator:

  • Total Power (Pmax): The total power is calculated by multiplying the wattage of each panel by the number of panels in series and parallel:
    Total Power = Panel Wattage × Number of Panels in Series × Number of Panels in Parallel

  • Max PV Voltage (VOC Total): The maximum voltage of your solar array is calculated by multiplying the panel’s open circuit voltage by the number of panels in series and applying a temperature correction factor:
    VOC Total = Panel VOC × Number of Panels in Series × Temperature Correction Factor

  • Max Charging Current (Imax): The maximum charging current is calculated by dividing the total power by the battery charging voltage:
    Imax = Total Power ÷ Battery Charging Voltage (e.g., 14.5V for a 12V system)

  • Short Circuit Current (ISC Total): The short circuit current is determined by multiplying the panel’s short circuit current by the number of panels in parallel:
    ISC Total = Panel ISC × Number of Panels in Parallel
